Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) treatment is an evidence-based intervention used to help individuals struggling with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). This therapeutic approach focuses on gradually exposing clients to their specific obsessive thoughts or situations that trigger anxiety and distress. By facing these fears in a controlled setting without engaging in compulsive behaviors, individuals can learn to tolerate the anxiety and prevent the compulsions that typically follow. Through this process, clients can reduce the frequency and intensity of their obsessions and compulsions, ultimately gaining more control over their symptoms and reclaiming their lives from the grip of OCD. This treatment can be highly effective in significantly improving the quality of life for individuals who find OCD to be debilitating.

Trauma specific approach

For those who have experienced a significant traumatic event (i.e. a life-threatening event, sexual assault, death of a family member etc.) it’s vital to process the event in an emotionally safe and empowering environment.

It’s critical that confidentiality and trust are protected throughout this process and the individual has control over their healing process. Together, we will work to:

  • Set goals and develop a plan to meet specific needs.

  • Reshape misunderstandings or beliefs about the trauma (i.e. “This is all my fault.”, “I deserved what happened to me.”).

  • Work to develop coping skills to manage emotional distress.

environment

Creating a safe and comfortable environment where a you can freely express yourself is vital for success in counselling. For this reason, in addition to a traditional counselling office, I also offer online counselling sessions and outdoor counselling sessions. My aim is to remain flexible to meet the unique needs of each client and to maintain an interactive experience which provides alternatives to traditional models of counselling.

young children & family involvement

In order for a younger children to thrive, it’s key the child feels respected and validated. In my practice, I adhere to a strengths based approach and client centered model which empowers a child to discover their unique strengths and take an active role in counselling. I work in collaboration with each child to identify specific and attainable goals focused on meeting their needs and improving their overall wellbeing.

Family support is critical for any child experiencing emotional or behavioral difficulties. By partnering together, parents will have the opportunity to voice their support, empower their child, and reinforce positive coping skills at home. Children who know they have the support and validation of their family during vulnerable and formative years of their life make quicker and better progress.
